"Because We Can" Giving Circle

On May 9, the Because We Can giving circle, made up of staff from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, hosted its inaugural meeting with a dinner at the Leawood home of the foundation's President and CEO Laura McKnight. The group personally donated $2,500 to fund a scholarship for an incoming student at the UMKC Institute for Urban Education. UMKC and the UMKC Alumni Committee on Multicultural Affairs heard about the contribution and both agreed to match the $2,500- bringing the gift total to $7,500.

Charity Giving Cards

Much like a retail gift card, anyone can purchase a Charity Giving Card online at www.gkccf.org or through the Community Foundation, receive a tax deduction and give the Giving Card to a friend, relative or coworker for any special occasion.

Start a Family Foundation for Less Than You Think
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation can help you improve our region's quality of life in ways that matter most to you.

Start by establishing a family foundation fund for less than you think. Consider the following features of a family fund:
Gifts of cash are deductible up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI), versus up to 30 percent to a private foundation; a fund allows you to maximize your giving each year

  • Receive a full fair market value deduction for gifts of real estate and closely-held stock; these gifts to a private foundation are deductible at cost basis
  • No federal excise taxes are imposed on your family fund, and there is no required annual payout
  • No separate annual tax return or audit is required
  • No cost to establish your family foundation and becoming operational doesn't take much time at all

If you already have a private foundation of your own, sometimes it makes sense to incorporate a fund at the Community Foundation into your charitable giving plan as a complement to your private foundation. Click on the headline to read more.
